Hanoi: 3Days: Lan Ha bay: classic cruises & Ninh Binh trip
Lan Ha Bay gives you the limestone islands and calm water associated with Halong Bay, but with a quieter feel and fewer boats. This three-day trip pairs that cruise with Ninh Binh’s temples, viewpoints, caves, and river scenery, giving you two of northern Vietnam’s best natural areas in one booking.
I like the small cruise size, with about 20 people on board, and the useful mix of kayaking, swimming, cooking, squid fishing, and a bike ride to Viet Hai Village. I also like the value: at $227 per person, you get the cruise, transport, meals, a Ninh Binh bungalow, a full-day tour, entrance tickets, and an English-speaking guide.
The main drawback is the pace. Day three packs Bich Dong, Mua Cave, Hoa Lu, and Trang An into one long day, with 500 steps at Mua Cave. Weather can also affect swimming and outdoor activities, and one visitor found the water near Halong Bay too polluted-looking for a swim.
Key points to know before booking

- Two major sights in one trip: Cruise Lan Ha Bay and central Halong Bay, then continue to Ninh Binh without returning to Hanoi between the two.
- A small boat with active outings: Expect kayaking, swimming, a cooking demonstration, squid fishing, and cycling in Viet Hai Village.
- About 20 people on board: The boat is more personal than a large cruise ship, though the exact group size can vary.
- A full Ninh Binh day: Bich Dong Pagoda, Mua Cave, Hoa Lu, and Trang An are all included, along with lunch, transport, a guide, and tickets.
- Bring clothes for changing weather: You need comfortable shoes, beachwear, hiking shoes, long pants, and a change of clothes.
- Check the cabin arrangement: Three people are placed in a triple cabin automatically. A single cabin costs an additional $40 per person.
Why this combination works

Many northern Vietnam trips force you to choose between the bay and Ninh Binh. This one connects both. You spend the first day and night on the water, then travel directly from Cai Beo Harbour to Ninh Binh on the second afternoon.
That saves time and removes a separate transport booking. You do not need to arrange a taxi, train, or private car between the two areas. The trade-off is that the second day becomes mostly a transfer day after the morning village visit.
The route is also a good fit if you want more than a boat ride. The cruise includes time on the water, but you also kayak around Ba Trai Dao, swim if conditions allow, cycle through Cat Ba National Park, and see a local village. Ninh Binh then adds temples, a mountain viewpoint, and a slow boat through caves.
I would choose this trip for a first visit to northern Vietnam when I had only three days available. It gives you a broad taste of the region without asking you to organize each part separately.

Day one: from Hanoi to Ba Trai Dao

The day starts early, with pickup from Hanoi’s Old Quarter at 7:10. The bus uses the expressway and reaches Beo Harbour on Cat Ba Island at about 11:30.
After boarding around 12:05, you receive a welcome drink and a safety briefing before settling into your cabin. The boat serves lunch while cruising around Cat Ba Island, passing Coc Ngoi Islet and moving through Cua Dong toward the Ba Trai Dao area.
The timing works well because you can eat while the scenery changes. You are not spending the first afternoon waiting around at the port. Cabins have air-conditioning and private bathrooms, and bottled water is provided in the cabin.
Ba Trai Dao is the main afternoon stop. The name refers to the Three Peaches area, known for small beaches and limestone islets. You can kayak around the coves and swim in the bay when the water and weather cooperate.
This is one of the strongest parts of the trip. Kayaking gives you a closer view of the rock formations than you get from the main boat. It also breaks up the sitting and eating that can take over a classic cruise.
Bring a change of clothes and something suitable for wet activities. A towel dryer was requested by one person, so do not count on a dedicated drying system in the bathroom. You will be better off with quick-drying clothes and a small bag for damp items.
Back on board around 5:15, the schedule turns social. You can take sunset photos, join happy hour, watch a cooking demonstration, and later join squid fishing or karaoke. Some of these activities depend on weather and sea conditions. Rain interrupted several of the extra activities for one booking, so keep your expectations flexible.
Dinner is served at 7:00. Food is a major strength of the trip, with plentiful meals and several choices, including vegetarian options. One person with food allergies found the staff willing to accommodate dietary needs, but you should still explain your requirements clearly before meals.
The evening is relaxed rather than polished. You can enjoy a drink from the bar, watch the water, fish for squid, or join karaoke. Drinks from the bar are not included, so bring cash or a card for those purchases. Alcohol and drugs are not permitted.
Day two: Viet Hai Village and the move to Ninh Binh

The second day starts early. Coffee is available at 6:00, followed by breakfast at 7:00. Sunrise conditions vary, but the early hour gives you a peaceful time on deck if the sky is clear.
At 8:00, you take a bike ride to Viet Hai Village in Cat Ba National Park. The route gives you a look at local life, including the village school and a fish massage experience.
The cycling is not simply a transport detail. It gives the morning a different rhythm after the previous day on the boat. You see more of Cat Ba Island and spend time away from the main cruise route. Bring comfortable cycling clothes and closed-toe shoes.
The schedule returns you to the boat at about 11:00 for lunch before disembarking at Cai Beo Harbour around 11:45. At 12:15, the bus leaves for Ninh Binh.
This is a long transfer, with arrival at your Ninh Binh hotel, resort, or bungalow around 5:05. You should expect the second day to feel full even though the sightseeing portion is limited to the morning. The benefit is direct transport. The cost is several hours on the road after breakfast.
Your second night is in a bungalow in Ninh Binh, with dinner and breakfast included. The accommodation is a practical overnight stop before the full-day excursion. It is not presented as a luxury resort, so choose this package for convenience and location rather than high-end lodging.
Day three: four Ninh Binh highlights in one day

The Ninh Binh day begins with pickup between 8:00 and 8:30. The route includes Bich Dong Pagoda, Mua Cave, Hoa Lu, and Trang An.

Bich Dong Pagoda
Bich Dong is described as the oldest pagoda in Ninh Binh. It is an atmospheric first stop, with religious buildings set against limestone hills.
This visit is less strenuous than Mua Cave, which makes the order sensible. You can start with the pagoda and save your biggest climb for later in the morning.
Mua Cave and the 500 steps
At Mua Cave, you climb roughly 500 steps to the top of Mua Mountain. The name Mua means dance. The climb is the most physically demanding part of the day, particularly in heat or rain.
The reward is the view over Hoa Lu and the surrounding limestone country. Wear proper shoes rather than thin sandals, and carry water. The stairs are a real part of the experience, not a minor walk from the van.
This stop may not suit everyone. If you have limited mobility or dislike steep climbs, you can still enjoy the lower area, but the main viewpoint requires the ascent. Give yourself time and do not treat the steps as a race.
Hoa Lu, Vietnam’s ancient capital
At Hoa Lu, you visit the temples of Dinh King and Le King, connected with the tenth-century royal capital of Vietnam. The stop adds historical context to a day otherwise focused on scenery.
Your guide explains the role of the two kings and the wars with China. This is where having an English-speaking guide matters. The temples are more meaningful when you understand who they honor and why the capital was located in this area.
Trang An by small boat
After lunch at about 12:30, the group continues to Trang An. A small boat carries you through limestone cliffs, quiet streams, rice fields, and caves.
The route includes Sang Cave, Toi Cave, Ba Giot Cave, and Nau Ruou Cave. The boat ride is calm and scenic, with sections of low, dark cave passages followed by open views.
Trang An is the gentlest activity of the day. You are seated while a local boat operator handles the route, but the full experience still takes time. The water, cliffs, and caves provide a strong finish after the climb and temple visits.
The van returns to the hotel around 5:15. This is a long day, but it covers a lot. You see the main Ninh Binh highlights without arranging separate tickets, transfers, or a guide.
Food, cabins, and group size

The boat serves lunch and dinner on day one, breakfast and lunch on day two, and the Ninh Binh stay includes dinner and breakfast. The food is described as varied and plentiful, with vegetarian choices available.
The generous portions are useful after kayaking and cycling, though some people may find there is more food than they can finish. Drinks from the bar cost extra, so the advertised price does not cover every purchase on board.
Cruise cabins are deluxe cabins with air-conditioning and en-suite bathrooms. The package includes one night on the cruise and a bungalow for the second night. If three people book together, the operator automatically arranges a triple cabin.
Solo guests need to budget an extra $40 per person for a single cabin. That is an important detail when comparing the headline price with the actual cost of traveling alone.
The boat carries about 20 people according to the available trip details. That is large enough for social activities such as karaoke, but small enough to avoid the feel of a major floating resort. Group size can affect the kayaking, biking, and meal schedule, so do not expect a private tour.
How good is the $227 value?

At $227 per person, the price is strong for a three-day package that includes two nights of accommodation, meals, transport from Hanoi to Cat Ba and onward to Ninh Binh, the cruise, kayaking, biking, the full Ninh Binh day, tickets, and guiding.
The biggest value comes from the connections. You do not need to book a Hanoi to Cat Ba transfer, a cruise, a Cat Ba to Ninh Binh transfer, a Ninh Binh hotel, or a separate full-day excursion.
You are paying for convenience as well as sightseeing. The compromise is a fixed schedule and limited free time. You cannot linger at Mua Cave, skip a temple to relax, or choose a different Ninh Binh route.
The package earns its price best when you want a packed introduction to northern Vietnam. If your priority is a quiet luxury cruise or several slow days in one place, this is not the right format.
What to pack for the three days

I would pack light, since you are changing from a cruise cabin to a Ninh Binh bungalow and spending much of the trip outdoors.
Bring:
- Passport or identification
- Comfortable walking shoes and closed-toe shoes
- Hiking shoes or sturdy footwear for Mua Cave
- Beachwear and a change of clothes
- Long pants and a long-sleeved shirt
- Clothes that can get dirty or wet
- Cycling clothing
- Camera
- Cash, credit card, and any required travel documents
The packing list includes climbing gear, a dive log, and a collared shirt, but not every item will be needed by every person. For this route, the practical essentials are dry clothes, sun protection, comfortable shoes, and cash for drinks.
Who should book this trip?

I would recommend it to first-time visitors who want both bay scenery and Ninh Binh without arranging the transport themselves. It also suits active couples, friends, and families with older children who can manage kayaking, cycling, and the Mua Cave climb.
It is a good choice if you enjoy full days and a social boat. Guide Tom is described as funny and well organized on the cruise, with useful information about Cat Ba’s history and culture. Tony is also named as a strong organizer for the group.
I would think twice if you need a slow pace, dislike early mornings, or want a quiet luxury stay. Rain can cancel or weaken some outdoor activities, and the bay water may not always look inviting for swimming.
Should you book it?

Book this trip if you want the most sightseeing possible in three days and value having transport, meals, lodging, guides, and tickets handled together. The combination of Lan Ha Bay, Viet Hai Village, Mua Cave, Hoa Lu, Bich Dong, and Trang An gives you a broad view of northern Vietnam for $227.
Skip it if you want to linger. The schedule is active, the Ninh Binh day is demanding, and the second day includes a long bus ride. For the right person, though, this is an efficient and well-rounded route, with especially good value in the small-group cruise and included Ninh Binh tour.
