Spend about 50 minutes watching Vietnamese water puppetry at Hanoi’s Thang Long Theater. Puppets act out village life, legends, farming, fishing, and sacred tales beside Hoan Kiem Lake. Advance tickets help secure a showtime and seat, but direct box-office prices may be lower.

“I learned more about Vietnamese history and culture in an hour at this theatre than in a week at other attractions - and it was entertaining. Things I had seen around Hanoi that seemed odd suddenly made sense: why is there a gold plated turtle in the One Pillar Pagoda? Why is the lake called Restored Sword Lake? It all makes sense now. If you aren't fluent in Vietnamese, get the audio guide - it is really well put together and provides a translation of each item automatically as the show plays.”
